Giant Obstacle?

Posted on by Dennis Krause

I will be surprised if the Packers dismantle the Giants at Lambeau Field like they did in December of 2010 when they crushed New York 45-17 to start Green Bay’s 19-game winning streak.

The Giants have some qualities that make them worthy of respect. They have a coach-quarterback combination that has won a Super Bowl. Tom Coughlin and Eli Manning will not be in awe of the moment. They also have the experience of having won the 2007 NFC Championship game at Lambeau. Only 14 Giants remain from that team. Still, it’s a positive memory than can provide some confidence. They also know from the 38-35 Week 13 loss in New Jersey that they can play this year’s Packers team to the last minute.

Here are some personnel matchups that the Packers will need to be concerned about Sunday:

1)      The Giants defensive line. Can Chad Clifton be up to the task after so little playing time this season? It’s not all on him, but the Packers coaching staff will be watching him closely early.

2)      The Giants wide receivers. Cruz, Nicks and Manningham are tough covers. The Packers defense has yielded plenty of big plays.

3)      This is the wild card. The Giants running game. They were the worst in the NFL during the regular season but Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw produced Sunday in the playoff win over Atlanta. I think the Packers can beat the Giants without much of a running game but I think the Giants have to be able to run for at least 120 yards to control the clock and keep Aaron Rodgers off the field.

The Packers certainly have their share of advantages, especially their receivers against the Giants secondary. The status of New York cornerback Aaron Ross is crucial. He suffered a concussion against the Falcons and will need medical clearance to play. If he can’t suit up, rookie Prince Amukamara will be tested by the Packers.

I see a close Packers victory but the Giants will give them all they can handle.
